to sleep, to rest, perchance to dream?
her mind was up and going
ballet shoes on
tango shoes in hand
whistling Dixie
singing a Gardel-type tune in
SpanishFrenchEnglish
she warned her mind, her feet
of the dangers of over-exertion
of the dangers of burning the candle
at all twenty-two ends
but dancing minds
intent on writing lines
whether of deathless prose
or doggerel
are never known for listening
(she needs a keeper
a lover
a baseball bat wielder
who will shut her up
make her sleep
make her take her vitamins
make her stop
take off dancing shoes
sleep
sleep…

le pidió a su bendita mente que se calmara
que durmiera, descansara, ¿tal vez soñara?
su mente estaba en pie y activa
con las zapatillas de ballet puestas
los zapatos de tango en la mano
silbando Dixie
cantando una tonada tipo Gardel
en españolfrancésinglés
le advirtió a su mente y a sus pies
de los peligros del sobre-esfuerzo
de quemar la vela
por veintidos lados distintos
pero las mentes que bailan
empeñadas en escribir líneas
ya sea de prosa inmortal
o coplas de ciego
rara vez escuchan
(necesita un guardián
un amante
un tipo con un bate
que la calle
la haga dormir
la obligue a tomarse las vitaminas
la haga parar
quitarse las zapatillas de baile
dormir
dormir...

envueltos en juegos atléticos de fornicación
reyes por una noche
féminas con ojos de ciervo hambriento
con cara no tanto de mujer fatal como de casi muertas
los ojos mostrando una necesidad de tacto
de una palabra dulce, de cualquier conversación
para sentirse queridas
para ser reinas por una noche y un día
los hombres de ojos tristes y las féminas hambrientas
envueltos en baile sin amor
el olor del miedo
el olor de la lujuria pornográfica
el cuarto círculo del infierno

bringing bills and dunning notices
and a notice of disconnection of
“all essential services”
this business of cheer
brightness and joy
in the face of forbidding relatives
a dead sea of tears
six many fathom deep
alas, this business of life
of love despite it all
this business of keeping the faith ofkeepingthelightonforyoumotelsix
this business of the other cheek and smiles in hot parched summers
this business of this thing called alas which in Spanish is wings
which in Spanish is the means to fly wings alas in sadness my joy

este asunto de crearse a sí mismo
de recoger los pedazos
magullados en las peleas diarias
y quien va a sacar la basura
(romeo romeo por qué eres romeo)
y los pagos de hipoteca
mamita queridísima
y asistentes odiosos en lotes de estacionamiento
y el cartero que sí viene dos veces
a traer cuentas por cobrar y notificaciones de demandas
y una notificación de la desconnexión
de “todos los servicios esenciales”
este asunto de la alegría
la vivacidad y el gozo
a pesar de parientes sombríos
un mar muerto de lágrimas
seis y más brazas de profundidad
ay de mí, este asunto de la vida
del amor por encima de todo
este asunto de mantener la fé dedejarlaluzprendidaparaustedmotel
seis este asunto de la otra mejilla y sonrisas en veranos calientes y
