The Combination of VMware 6.x and Ubuntu 7.x Works

Sure, you can install Ubuntu 7.10 on VMware 5.x but when you compile VMware Tools (because the appropriate source code and make ship with Ubuntu 7.x) you don’t get full support for VMware features like Autofit and Resize preferences (see “Fitting the Workstation Console to the Virtual Machine Display”). And what makes me totally unconcerned with using Ubuntu 7.x on VMware 5.x is the lack of ‘fluid’ mouse support. My mouse will be forever trapped inside the guest machine when 7.x is on 5.x…

However, the combination of VMware 6.x and Ubuntu 7.x just works.

What’s New So Far in Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Edition

Here in the rasx() context, these are the notable new bits that jump out at me:

• The glChess game is installed by default.

• The Alacarte Menu Editor is gone. This functionality is now a formally under System Preferences.

• There is this new (improved) Restricted Drivers feature that informs me that VMware drivers will not be supported.

• Support for mounting Windows shares in GNOME is improved.

• I’m pretty sure that the latest version MonoDevelop will work correctly but I haven’t played around with this since last August.### What’s New So Far in VMware 6.x

• “VMware Workstation 6 virtually trounces the competition” by Mayank Sharma.

• The full-screen ‘mode’ comes with a graphical ‘ribbon’ and keyboard shortcuts that allow changing from machine to machine without the mouse (however, the default key combination, Ctrl-Alt left/right arrow, conflicts with default GNOME Workspace switching—this can be changed).
